In Islam, prayer (Salat in Arabic) occupies a central place in the lives of believers. It must be performed with respect and devotion. This also applies to the choice of clothing worn during prayer. The qamis, a garment traditionally worn by Muslim men, often raises questions as to whether it is compulsory or not. In this article, we take a look at the subject.

What is a qamis?

The qamis is a long garment generally worn by Muslim men. It is distinguished by its simple, straight cut, long sleeves and open collar. It can be made from a variety of fabrics, such as cotton, silk or linen, and comes in a range of colors, although white and black are the most common. This type of garment is frequently used for prayer because of its comfort and modesty.

Qamis and prayer: a question of conformity

For a prayer to be valid under Islamic law, certain rules and conditions must be respected. Among these are the precepts relating to the clothing worn during this sacred moment. In particular, clothing must

  • Cover the intimate parts (awra) of the body:
  • Be clean and purified.
  • Not contain images or motifs representing living beings, such as animals or human beings.
  • Not be made from forbidden materials, such as silk for men or predator skins for all.

The qamis meets these requirements thanks to its ample cut and its ability to cover the wearer's body properly. In addition, it is made from authorized materials and does not feature patterns contrary to Islamic principles.

Is wearing a qamis to prayer an obligation?

Although the qamis is considered a suitable garment for prayer, it is not strictly obligatory. Indeed, Islamic law does not require that this type of garment be worn specifically during Salat. However, it is advisable to choose modest garments that meet the conditions mentioned above.

Other types of clothing permitted during prayer

It is possible to wear other types of clothing during prayers, as long as they comply with the rules and requirements set out above.

Here are a few examples:

  • For men
    • pants or sarouel with a long shirt,
    • loose-fitting tracksuit,
    • a tunic with pants.
  • For women
    • a long, loose-fitting dress,
    • a tunic-and-pants or tunic-and-legging ensemble, accompanied by a khimar or other veil covering the chest and shoulders.

In short, it's up to each individual to adapt his or her outfit to suit his or her needs and preferences, while taking care to remain modest and in line with Islamic principles during prayer.

Choosing a qamis for its other benefits

While wearing a qamis is not an obligation for Muslims at prayer, it remains a popular choice for several reasons:

  • Comfort: thanks to its wide, loose-fitting cut, the qamis allows appreciable freedom of movement during the various phases of Salat (bowing, prostration...).
  • Modesty: qamis provide perfect coverage of intimate parts, without the risk of molding or other indiscretions.
  • Practicality: this type of garment requires no other accessory to comply with Islamic rules. Simply put it on and you'll be sure that your outfit is suitable for prayer.
  • Identification: by wearing a qamis, you distinguish yourself as a Muslim and demonstrate your attachment to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

So, although not compulsory, the qamis is an interesting option for Muslims looking for suitable, comfortable clothing that respects Islamic precepts during their prayers. However, everyone is free to choose the outfit that suits them best, as long as it meets the requirements set out above.
